Journal Entry 2 - Due Tuesday, October 18th, in-class (no online submissions for this)
Choose ONE of the journal entries below and respond, in a well developed essay, to the questions posed in the entry. This journal entry should be no less than one page in length (hand-written). Be as specific as you can by making reference, when possible, to the film.
1. A pun is most often seen as humorous. But, in this novel (and in the film) the narrator uses dark or solemn puns like Out-With and Fury to convey certain meanings. Bruno is simply mispronouncing the real words, but the author is clearly asking the reader to consider a double meaning to these words. What is the message that is being conveyed to the reader? How do these words further communicate the horror of the situation? Using your knowledge of the Holocaust, do you think that the Canadians at the time agreed with the pun “Out-With”?
2. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is an example of historical fiction. Historical fiction is a type of text in which the story is fiction, but the background of the story takes place during an historical event. Obviously the story of Bruno and Schmuel is fiction; why do you think John Boyne wrote the story to take place during the Holocaust? Imagine that this story actually did occur. How do you think that it would have changed the Holocaust, or would it have changed it at all? Would it have put an end to it? Prolonged it?
3. When Bruno dresses in the filthy striped pajamas, he remembers something his grandmother once said. “You wear the right outfit and you feel like the person you’re pretending to be.” (book version, p, 205) How is this true for Bruno? What about his father? What does this statement contribute to the overall meaning of the story? Can this statement relate to Canadian Identity? Why or why not? Does it relate better to American identity?
